Today a dear friend of mine lost her husband to cancer. It seems like the ultimate injustice, doesn’t it? They did everything right. They got married, had two sweet girls. They worked hard. They loved one another. They fought for each other. Then the diagnosis came and suddenly, she’s in a cab heading home from the hospital. Without him.
It sucks. I want to hunt down this cancer and kick its ass! Who’s with me?
Now I didn’t know Robert. I met him, thought he was an awesome guy. We quickly bonded over our Minnesota roots, talking about eating casseroles made of cream of celery/mushroom/chicken soup, Princess Kay of the Milky Way and our love for the Minnesota State Fair. I remember talking to him about how it should be illegal to put children on reality TV shows. He got more fired up about that topic than I do.
But what I’ll always remember about him is how loving he was toward his wife. He came to the office to take her out for lunch on their anniversary. She was so excited for the surprise date. After we all went to happy hour once, they went for dinner while their girls were at home with his parents who were in town from Minnesota. I remember thinking that night how Barbara and Robert looked like the homecoming queen and king in high school. They would’ve been named cutest couple in the yearbook for sure. I was so happy for her that she had this fantastic man in her life.
It’s really hard to believe that was just two months ago. Hug your loved ones a little tighter tonight please.
