A friend of mine was whiny, “Candace, you’re doing all these cool things. I have nothing going on,” he said after I told him about a museum I visited.
Yes, I am doing cool things But it’s not like the International Center of Photography invited me on a tour and sent a car to pick me up. I found the website, looked up the hours, walked to Avenue of the Americas, went in asked for a ticket and was rewarded with an afternoon of looking at amazing photographs. Anyone can do that.
I’m a firm believer in the idea that things don’t just happen to you. You have to get out there and make them happen. I get rather defensive when people say, you’re so lucky you’re in good shape/you could move to New York/you have a cool job. Luck has nothing to do with it! All those things took work to achieve and take work to maintain.
Sure, I’ve had an advantage from time to time. For example, I had a job to move with to New York. But other people, like my friend Quyn, have made that move on a prayer and succeeded. Because they worked at it.
I’ll stop ranting now.
