What you should know about me

You can’t expect people to know that which you don’t tell them, a friend likes to remind me. As things come up, we like to tell each other “another thing you should know about me.” Please share yours, too. I’d like to know.

1.I don’t like loud, crowded places. A concert would have to be really special for me to want to go. I do not want to go out to the clubs with you this or any other weekend. I love being social, but I also prefer to be able to hear the people I’m with.
2.The worst feeling for me is feeling ignored or left out.
3.I also dislike when people assume I can’t take care of me. I can. I’m not a dumb girl. I have common sense. I can ask for help when I need it. I’ve got this.
4.I don’t like mushrooms. But I will not eat waterchestnuts or pistachios. They make me gag.
5.I have a sweet tooth, but I’ve cut a lot of sugar out of my diet over the past year.
6.I love passing tests. I beam when the dentist tells me I have nice teeth. I proudly tell the doctor I work out and don’t smoke.
7.Similarly, I love feeling accomplished. It’s a great feeling for me to lie in bed at night and think, “I ate vegetables, ran 4.5K, finished a project for class and called a friend today. I did something!”
8.I can’t imagine life without my Dyson vacuum cleaner and my Mario Batali dutch oven.
9.I just recently discovered my love of laughing and playing.
10.If I have nothing to add, I’m perfectly content to listen. Sometimes when I’m quietly taking in a conversation, people ask me if I’m OK. I am. I’m listening and learning.
11. I judge people who don’t recycle. Future generations don’t want to share the planet with that Diet Coke bottle you drank from in 2003.

12.Our family joke is don’t compliment Dad. He already has a big head. We don’t have to encourage him. I inherited that self confidence. I might not be the boss at work, a marathon finisher or even a master’s degree holder, but I don’t need that. I still think I’m pretty great.
13.I’ve spent the last couple of days dancing to Florence + The Machine “Shake It Out.” (Maybe you didn’t really need to know this one.)

I’m a journalist, nutritionist, doting auntie, one-time bobsledder, and wannabe health nut (who loves chocolate and pizza too much to fully commit). I don't want you to think my life is perfect. It's not.

Let's talk it out
