I consider myself a positive, happy person. In fact, I’ve been known to annoy people with my optimism. So, I was taken by surprise when my therapist told me I need to recognize happiness in my present life. She said I, like many people, tend to expect to find happiness in the future (she’s right. I do that). For example, as soon as I find a new job or pay off my student loans or move to the city, I’ll be happy. Only to get to that next thing and find that really, nothing’s changed.
So I present 10 things making me happy today … or this week or recently. Today-ish, OK?
1.Driving the span of I-5 over Portage Bay. I saw Lake Union sparkling and Seattle just waking up. It reminded me how over-the-moon ecstatic I am to live here. Seattle, you’re my Emerald City.
2.Walking into the hair salon I frequented for five years back in Bremerton. My stylist, Callie greeted me with a huge hug and a “Candace! I’m so glad to see you!” She went on to tell me it made her day when I called for an appointment. She also thanked me for my recommendation on Yelp. Her enthusiasm for my entrance made my day! Leaving with fantastic hair was just a bonus.
3.Meeting up with girls I haven’t seen nearly enough since my move. They reminded me of all the good people I’ve stocked my life with. I’m so proud of the quality friends I have. I think Rihanna sums it up well: “Told you I’ll be here forever. // Said I’ll always be a friend. // Took an oath, Ima stick it out till the end.” Feel free to come stand under my umbrella, ladies.
4.I’m rocking my nutrition class. 97 percent with three weeks left in the quarter. I’m so into nutrition.
5.On Friday, a friend thanked me for listening to her and for giving good advice, and not just telling her what she wanted to hear. It was refreshing to think I could challenge someone to see things differently.
6.My nephew said, “Luh-you, (something that kind of resembled) Candace. That boy has captured my heart forever. What, you want a pony, swimming pool, ride-on train? Auntie will get it for you!
7. Yoga class. OK, some weekends I don’t feel like going out in the rain, cold and/or wind for the 10-minute walk to the studio, but after class I feel like a warrior who could walk 20 more minutes in the rain, cold and/or wind!
8.My homemade treasures. Pillow covers, sewn by me. A scarf knitted with my two hands. The gorgeous dresser I painted. The dining chairs my friend and I lovingly recovered. Guacamole, hummus and soup made by me.
9.I wrote my grandma a letter. You know, with a pen and stationery. I wrote her address on an envelope and put a stamp on it and dropped it in a mailbox. That kind of letter. In the letter, I asked my grandma what made her happy. I’m anticipating her response (hopefully that’ll lead to another post). I e-mailed my man’s Papa a similar note. He told me about fishing & included photos.
10.Feeling strength in myself. It’s a powerful feeling to think, “I’ve got this.”
